UBUNTU-CVE-2024-57910: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: iio: light: vcnl4035: fix information leak in triggered buffer The 'buffer' local array is used to push data to userspace from a triggered buffer, but it does not set an initial value for the single data element, which is an u16 aligned to 8 bytes. That leaves at least 4 bytes uninitialized even after writing an integer value with regmapread(). Initialize the array to zero before using it to avoid pushing uninitialized information to userspace.

In the Linux kernel iio: light: vcnl4035 triggered-buffer code, initialize the local buffer array to zero before using it to push data to userspace, ensuring the u16 data element's 8-byte-aligned storage does not contain uninitialized bytes.

Frequently Asked Questions
What access does an attacker need to exploit this issue?
The vulnerability has local attack vector, low attack complexity, and requires low privileges. No user interaction is required.
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are affected?
The listed affected software includes ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-aws, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-ibm, and ubuntu/linux-oracle.
What information could be exposed?
The triggered buffer can return uninitialized kernel memory bytes to userspace. The issue occurs because an 8-byte-aligned buffer holds a single u16 data element, leaving at least 4 bytes uninitialized after the sensor value is read.
What change resolves the information leak?
The resolved kernel change initializes the local triggered-buffer array to zero before it is populated and pushed to userspace.
