UBUNTU-CVE-2024-57911: High severity ubuntu/linux-azure vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: iio: dummy: iiosimplydummybuffer: fix information leak in triggered buffer The 'data' array is allocated via kmalloc() and it is used to push data to user space from a triggered buffer, but it does not set values for inactive channels, as it only uses iioforeachactivechannel() to assign new values. Use kzalloc for the memory allocation to avoid pushing uninitialized information to userspace.

In the Linux kernel iio_simply_dummy_buffer triggered-buffer implementation, replace the kmalloc() allocation of the data array with kzalloc() to initialize inactive-channel values before pushing data to userspace.
Event History
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is exposed to this issue?
Systems running the listed Ubuntu Linux kernel packages may be exposed when the IIO dummy driver's triggered buffer is used. The issue affects data returned from that buffer to userspace.
What does an attacker need to exploit it?
The vector is local and requires low privileges. No user interaction is required.
What information could be disclosed?
Inactive channels in the triggered buffer may contain uninitialized kernel memory because they are not assigned values before being pushed to userspace. The impact is an information disclosure; integrity impact is not indicated.
How is the issue fixed?
The fix changes allocation of the buffer's data array from kmalloc() to kzalloc(), ensuring the memory is zero-initialized before data is returned to userspace.
