Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems running the affected Ubuntu kernel packages are relevant only if they use IEEE 802.15.4 networking hardware or interfaces. The listed packages include Ubuntu linux, linux-fips, and the AWS, Azure, and GCP kernel variants, including their FIPS variants.
What conditions are required to trigger the failure?
The failure involves removing an IEEE 802.15.4 network interface after its associated IEEE 802.15.4 hardware device has been unregistered. The reported sequence is a race between interface deletion and hardware unregistration that can result in deletion of an already removed list entry.
What is the practical impact of successful triggering?
The reported outcome is a kernel BUG caused by corrupted list handling in ieee802154_if_remove. The CVSS vector indicates local access, high privileges, and an availability impact, with no indicated confidentiality or integrity impact.
How can an administrator determine whether the affected code path is in use?
Check whether the system has IEEE 802.15.4 hardware registered and whether IEEE 802.15.4 virtual interfaces are created, removed, or managed during device teardown. Kernel logs showing a BUG in __list_del_entry_valid_or_report or list_debug.c during IEEE 802.15.4 interface removal are consistent with this issue.
