UBUNTU-CVE-2024-58094: High severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: jfs: add check read-only before truncation in jfstruncatenolock() Added a check for "read-only" mode in the jfstruncatenolock function to avoid errors related to writing to a read-only filesystem. Call stack: blockwritebegin() { jfswritefailed() { jfstruncate() { jfstruncatenolock() { txEnd() { ... log = JFSSBI(tblk->sb)->log; // (log == NULL) If the isReadOnly(ip) condition is triggered in jfstruncatenolock, the function execution will stop, and no further data modification will occur. Instead, the xtTruncate function will be called with the "COMMITWMAP" flag, preventing modifications in "read-only" mode.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems using the listed Ubuntu Linux kernel packages may be affected when they use the JFS filesystem. This includes the standard, AWS, Azure, GCP, and FIPS kernel package variants identified in the advisory.
What conditions are needed to trigger the vulnerability?
The issue is reached when JFS truncation handling runs while the filesystem is in read-only mode. The supplied severity vector indicates an attacker needs local access and low privileges; no user interaction is required.
What is the likely impact?
The reported impact is availability only: attempts to write during read-only JFS truncation can lead to errors because the JFS log may be unavailable. The severity vector reports no confidentiality or integrity impact.
How does the fix prevent the problem?
The fix adds a read-only check in jfs_truncate_nolock(). When the filesystem is read-only, truncation stops before further data modification and uses xtTruncate with the COMMIT_WMAP flag.
