UBUNTU-CVE-2025-21678: High severity ubuntu/linux-azure vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: gtp: Destroy device along with udp socket's netns dismantle. gtpnewlink() links the device to a list in devnet(dev) instead of srcnet, where a udp tunnel socket is created. Even when srcnet is removed, the device stays alive on devnet(dev). Then, removing srcnet triggers the splat below. [0] In this example, gtp0 is created in ns2, and the udp socket is created in ns1. ip netns add ns1 ip netns add ns2 ip -n ns1 link add netns ns2 name gtp0 type gtp role sgsn ip netns del ns1 Let's link the device to the socket's netns instead. Now, gtpnetexitbatchrtnl() needs another netdev iteration to remove all gtp devices in the netns. Fix the GTP netnamespace teardown logic: have gtp_newlink() link the device to the UDP tunnel socket's netns rather than dev_net(dev), and add the required netdev iteration in gtp_net_exit_batch_rtnl() to remove all GTP devices during netns teardown.
Event History
Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions are required to trigger this issue?
An attacker needs local access and low-level privileges sufficient to create network namespaces and configure a GTP device whose UDP tunnel socket is created in a different network namespace. The triggering sequence shown creates a GTP device in one namespace and removes the namespace containing its UDP socket.
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are identified as affected?
The listed Ubuntu software includes linux, linux-fips, linux-aws-fips, linux-azure, linux-azure-fips, linux-gcp, linux-gcp-fips, and linux-oracle.
What can be done if an update cannot be applied immediately?
Restrict untrusted local users or workloads from creating and manipulating network namespaces and GTP devices, particularly configurations that place a GTP device and its UDP tunnel socket in different namespaces. Avoid deleting a namespace that owns a UDP tunnel socket used by a GTP device in another namespace.
