UBUNTU-CVE-2025-21694: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability

Published Feb 12, 2025
·
Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fs/proc: fix softlockup in readvmcore (part 2) Since commit 5cbcb62dddf5 ("fs/proc: fix softlockup in readvmcore") the number of softlockups in readvmcore at kdump time have gone down, but they still happen sometimes. In a memory constrained environment like the kdump image, a softlockup is not just a harmless message, but it can interfere with things like RCU freeing memory, causing the crashdump to get stuck. The second loop in readvmcore has a lot more opportunities for natural sleep points, like scheduling out while waiting for a data write to happen, but apparently that is not always enough. Add a condresched() to the second loop in readvmcore to (hopefully) get rid of the softlockups.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Which systems are most exposed to operational impact?

Systems that generate kdump crash dumps, particularly in memory-constrained kdump environments, are the relevant exposure scenario. The issue can prevent RCU from freeing memory and may cause crashdump collection to become stuck.

2

What access does an attacker need?

The supplied severity vector indicates local access with low privileges is required, and no user interaction is required. The available data does not describe a remote exploitation path.

3

How can I recognize this issue during incident handling?

Look for softlockup events involving __read_vmcore while collecting a kdump crash dump. A crashdump that becomes stuck, especially alongside such softlockup messages, is a relevant indicator.

4

Which Ubuntu kernel package families are listed as affected?

The listed packages are ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-aws, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-ibm, ubuntu/linux-oracle, ubuntu/linux-raspi, and ubuntu/linux-realtime.
