UBUNTU-CVE-2025-40098: Null Pointer Dereference
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: hda: cs35l41: Fix NULL pointer dereference in cs35l41getacpimutestate() Return value of a function acpievaluatedsm() is dereferenced without checking for NULL, but it is usually checked for this function. acpievaluatedsm() may return NULL, when acpievaluateobject() returns acpistatus other than ACPISUCCESS, so add a check to prevent the crach. Found by Linux Verification Center (linuxtesting.org) with SVACE.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
The affected Ubuntu kernel package variants listed are linux-riscv, linux-realtime, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-azure-fde, linux-hwe-edge, linux-gke, and linux-gkeop. Exposure depends on the system reaching the cs35l41 HDA driver path that evaluates the relevant ACPI DSM method.
What condition triggers the crash?
The crash can occur when acpi_evaluate_dsm() returns NULL after acpi_evaluate_object() fails with a status other than ACPI_SUCCESS. The driver previously dereferenced that return value without checking it for NULL.
What is the impact of successful triggering?
The provided information describes a NULL pointer dereference that can cause a kernel crash. It does not provide evidence of privilege escalation, data disclosure, or code execution.
