UBUNTU-CVE-2026-119719: Buffer Overflow
Blender before 4.5.15 and 5.x before 5.2.3 contains a heap buffer overflow vulnerability in the blend file thumbnail extractor caused by 32-bit integer overflow in thumbdataverticalflip(). Attackers can craft a .blend file with malicious TEST block dimensions that trigger an out-of-bounds write when blender-thumbnailer or the Windows shell extension previews it, causing crashes or code execution.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to exploitation?
Systems that generate previews for untrusted .blend files through blender-thumbnailer are exposed. The issue can also be triggered by the Windows shell extension when it previews a crafted file.
What does an attacker need to do to trigger the flaw?
An attacker needs to provide a crafted .blend file containing malicious TEST block dimensions and have it previewed by a thumbnailing component. The supplied severity vector indicates no attacker privileges are required, but user interaction is required.
How can I determine whether my Blender installation is affected?
Installations running Blender versions earlier than 4.5.15 are affected. Blender 5.x installations earlier than 5.2.3 are also affected.
