UBUNTU-CVE-2026-53134: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-azure vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: nftfib: fix stale stack leak via the OIFNAME register For NFTFIBRESULTOIFNAME the destination register is declared with len = IFNAMSIZ (four 32-bit registers), but on the lookup-fail, RTNLOCAL and oif-mismatch paths nftfib{4,6}eval() only writes one register via "dest = 0". The remaining three registers are left as whatever was on the stack in nftdochain()'s struct nftregs, and a downstream expression that loads the register span can leak that uninitialised kernel stack to userspace. The NFTAFIBFPRESENT existence check has the same shape: it is only meaningful for NFTFIBRESULTOIF, yet it was accepted for any result type while the eval stores a single byte via nftregstore8(), leaving the rest of the declared span stale. Fix both: - replace the bare "dest = 0" in the eval with nftfibstoreresult(), which strscpypad()s the whole IFNAMSIZ for OIFNAME (and is already used on the other early-return path), and - restrict NFTAFIBFPRESENT to NFTFIBRESULTOIF and declare its destination as a single u8, so the marked span matches the one byte the eval writes.

In nft_fib, replace the bare "*dest = 0" in the eval with nft_fib_store_result(), which strscpy_pad()s the full IFNAMSIZ span for OIFNAME; restrict NFTA_FIB_F_PRESENT to NFT_FIB_RESULT_OIF and declare its destination as a single u8 so the marked span matches the one byte written by nft_reg_store8().
Event History
Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions are needed to trigger the information leak?
An attacker needs to cause an nftables FIB expression to write an OIFNAME result, or use the NFTA_FIB_F_PRESENT existence check with an applicable result type, along a path where evaluation writes less data than the declared destination register span. A downstream expression must then load that register span, exposing stale kernel-stack contents to userspace.
Which evaluation paths leave stale register contents?
For NFT_FIB_RESULT_OIFNAME, lookup failure, RTN_LOCAL, and output-interface mismatch paths previously cleared only one register even though the result occupies IFNAMSIZ across four 32-bit registers. The F_PRESENT handling also accepted result types for which its one-byte write did not match the declared destination span.
What is the practical mitigation if an update cannot be applied immediately?
Avoid nftables rules that use NFT_FIB_RESULT_OIFNAME and subsequently load or expose its full destination register span. Also avoid using the NFTA_FIB_F_PRESENT flag except with NFT_FIB_RESULT_OIF, since the fix restricts that flag to this result type.
