UBUNTU-CVE-2026-53168: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fuse: reject fusenotify() pagecache ops on directories The operations FUSENOTIFYSTORE and FUSENOTIFYRETRIEVE allow the FUSE daemon to actively write/read pagecache contents. For directories with FOPENCACHEDIR, the pagecache is used as kernel-internal cache storage, and userspace is not supposed to have direct access to this cache - in particular, fuseparsecache() will hit WARNON() if the cache contains bogus data. Reject FUSENOTIFYSTORE and FUSENOTIFYRETRIEVE on anything other than regular files with -EINVAL.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is realistically exposed to this issue?
Systems using one of the listed Ubuntu kernel packages are exposed when they use FUSE filesystems whose daemon enables cached directories with FOPEN_CACHE_DIR. Exploitation requires a FUSE daemon able to issue FUSE_NOTIFY_STORE or FUSE_NOTIFY_RETRIEVE requests against a directory.
What access does an attacker need?
The vulnerability has local attack vector and requires low privileges. No user interaction is required, but the attacker must be able to interact with the affected FUSE setup in a way that causes the daemon to submit the relevant page-cache notification operations.
What is the impact of successful exploitation?
The affected notification operations can read from or write to directory page-cache contents that are intended only for kernel-internal cache storage. Bogus cache data can cause fuse_parse_cache() to trigger a WARN_ON(), with availability impact rated high and confidentiality and integrity impacts rated low.
What behavior changes after the fix?
The kernel rejects FUSE_NOTIFY_STORE and FUSE_NOTIFY_RETRIEVE requests unless they target regular files. Requests targeting directories or other non-regular file types fail with -EINVAL.
