UBUNTU-CVE-2026-53177: Null Pointer Dereference
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bnxten: Fix NULL pointer dereference PCIe errors detected by a Root Port or Downstream Port cause error recovery services to run on all subordinate devices regardless of administrative state. The .errordetected() callback, bnxtioerrordetected(), disables and synchronizes IRQs via bnxtdisableintsync(), which calls bnxtcpnumtoirqnum() to map completion rings to IRQs using bp->bnapi. Since bp->bnapi is allocated on NIC open and freed on NIC close, PCIe error recovery on a closed NIC can dereference a NULL pointer. Check if bp->bnapi is NULL before disabling and synchronizing IRQs.

In bnxt_io_error_detected(), check whether bp->bnapi is NULL before calling bnxt_disable_int_sync() to disable and synchronize IRQs.
Event History
Frequently Asked Questions
Which deployments are most likely to be affected?
The issue applies to the listed Ubuntu kernel packages when the bnxt_en driver is present and PCIe error recovery runs for a NIC that is administratively closed. PCIe Root Port or Downstream Port errors can trigger recovery for subordinate devices regardless of their administrative state.
What does an attacker need to exploit this issue?
The supplied CVSS vector indicates local access with low privileges is required, and no user interaction is required. The stated impact is availability only; confidentiality and integrity impacts are not indicated.
What happens during the vulnerable condition?
During PCIe error recovery, the driver's error callback disables and synchronizes interrupts. On a closed NIC, the bnapi structure may already have been freed, causing a NULL pointer dereference when completion rings are mapped to IRQs.
How can I determine whether a system is affected?
Review whether the system runs one of the listed Ubuntu kernel packages and uses the bnxt_en driver. The provided data does not include affected or fixed package versions, so it cannot establish patch status from version information alone.
