UBUNTU-CVE-2026-53181: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: vsock/vmci: fix skackbacklog leak on failed handshake When vmcitransportrecvconnectingserver() returns an error, vmcitransportrecvlisten() calls vsockremovepending() but never calls skacceptqremoved(). This leaves skackbacklog incremented permanently. Repeated handshake failures (malformed packets, queue pair alloc failure, event subscribe failure) cause skackbacklog to climb toward skmaxackbacklog. Once it reaches the limit the listener permanently refuses all new connections with -ECONNREFUSED, a silent denial of service requiring a process restart to recover. The two existing skacceptqremoved() calls in afvsock.c do not cover this path: line 764 checks vsockispending() which returns false after vsockremovepending(), and line 1889 is only reached on successful accept(). Fix by balancing skacceptqadded() with skacceptqremoved() on the error path.

In vmci_transport_recv_listen(), balance sk_acceptq_added() with sk_acceptq_removed() on the failed-handshake error path after vsock_remove_pending() is called, so sk_ack_backlog is decremented when vmci_transport_recv_connecting_server() returns an error.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Exposure is limited to affected Ubuntu kernel packages running a VMCI vsock listener. The listed packages include ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-oracle, and the listed FIPS cloud variants.
What does an attacker need to trigger the denial of service?
The vulnerability is locally exploitable with low privileges, low attack complexity, and no user interaction. An attacker needs to cause repeated VMCI vsock handshake failures, such as failures involving malformed packets, queue-pair allocation, or event subscription.
How can I tell whether a listener has been affected?
After enough failed handshakes, the affected listener permanently refuses new connections with ECONNREFUSED because its acknowledgement backlog reaches its configured maximum. The condition persists until the listening process is restarted.
What can be done if an update cannot be applied immediately?
Restarting the affected listening process restores its ability to accept connections. This is recovery rather than a fix: repeated failed handshakes can exhaust the backlog again.
