UBUNTU-CVE-2026-53218: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-azure vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: nftexthdr: fix register tracking for FPRESENT flag nftexthdrinit() passes user-controlled priv->len to nftparseregisterstore(), which marks that many bytes in the register bitmap as initialized. However, when NFTEXTHDRFPRESENT is set, the eval paths write only 1 byte (nftregstore8) or 4 bytes (dest = 0 on TCP/DCCP error path). When len > 4, registers beyond the first are never written, retaining uninitialized stack data from nftregs. Bail out if userspace requests too much data when FPRESENT is set.

In nft_exthdr_init(), reject or bail out when userspace supplies len > 4 with the F_PRESENT/NFT_EXTHDR_F_PRESENT flag set, since the evaluation paths write only 1 or 4 bytes.

Frequently Asked Questions
What level of access does an attacker need?
Exploitation requires local access and low privileges. No user interaction is required.
Which Ubuntu kernel package families are listed as affected?
The listed software includes ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-oracle, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips, and ubuntu/linux-aws-fips.
What is the security impact of the register-tracking flaw?
When F_PRESENT is used with a length greater than 4, bytes marked as initialized may not be written by the evaluation paths and can retain uninitialized nft_regs stack data. The supplied severity vector indicates a limited confidentiality impact, with no integrity or availability impact.
