UBUNTU-CVE-2026-53249: Low severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ipv4: restrict IPOPTSSRR and IPOPTLSRR options This patch restricts setting Loose Source and Record Route (LSRR) and Strict Source and Record Route (SSRR) IP options to users with CAPNETRAW capability. This prevents unprivileged applications from forcing packets to route through attacker-controlled nodes to leak TCP ISN and possibly other protocol information. While LSRR and SSRR are commonly filtered in many network environments, they may still be supported and forwarded along some network paths. RFC 7126 (Recommendations on Filtering of IPv4 Packets Containing IPv4 Options) recommend to drop these options in 4.3 and 4.4.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is most exposed to this issue?
Systems using the listed Ubuntu kernel packages are exposed when unprivileged local applications can send IPv4 packets with LSRR or SSRR options and network paths support or forward those options. Environments that already filter these options may have reduced exposure, but such filtering is not universal.
What does an attacker need to exploit this?
An attacker needs the ability to run an unprivileged application on the affected system and set IPv4 LSRR or SSRR options. The resolved change requires CAP_NET_RAW to set these options.
What can be done before an update is available?
Configure network filtering to drop IPv4 packets containing LSRR and SSRR options. RFC 7126 recommends dropping these options, and this reduces the chance that packets can be routed through attacker-controlled nodes.
