UBUNTU-CVE-2026-53263: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-azure vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: 6lowpan: fix off-by-one in multicast context address compression The second memcpy in lowpaniphcmcastctxaddrcompress() uses &data[1] as destination and &ipaddr->s6addr[11] as source, but both should be offset by one: &data[2] and &ipaddr->s6addr[12] respectively. This off-by-one has two consequences: 1. data[1] is overwritten with s6addr[11], corrupting the RIID field in the compressed multicast address 2. data[5] is never written, so uninitialized kernel stack memory is transmitted over the network via lowpanpushhcdata(), leaking kernel stack contents The correct inline data layout must match what the decompression function lowpanuncompressmulticastctxdaddr() expects: data[0..1] = s6addr[1..2] (flags/scope + RIID) data[2..5] = s6addr[12..15] (group ID) Also zero-initialize the data array as a defensive measure against similar bugs in the future.

In the Linux kernel function lowpan_iphc_mcast_ctx_addr_compress(), change the second memcpy destination from &data[1] to &data[2] and its source from &ipaddr->s6_addr[11] to &ipaddr->s6_addr[12], and zero-initialize the data array. Ensure the layout is data[0..1] = s6_addr[1..2] and data[2..5] = s6_addr[12..15].

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is exposed to this issue?
Systems running one of the listed Ubuntu Linux kernel packages are potentially affected when they use 6LoWPAN multicast context address compression. The issue is locally exploitable according to the supplied vector, and the leaked stack data is transmitted over the network.
What information could be exposed?
The off-by-one write leaves one byte of the compression buffer uninitialized. That kernel stack byte can be sent through lowpan_push_hc_data(), potentially disclosing kernel stack contents to a network recipient.
Does the flaw also affect packet correctness?
Yes. The faulty copy overwrites the RIID field in the compressed multicast address, corrupting the compressed address layout in addition to leaving a byte uninitialized.
What code change resolves the issue?
The corrected implementation copies the group ID to data[2..5] from s6_addr[12..15], rather than using the prior one-byte-earlier offsets. It also zero-initializes the data array defensively.
