UBUNTU-CVE-2026-53337: Null Pointer Dereference
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: bonding: fix NULL pointer dereference in bonddoioctl() In bonddoioctl(), slavedev is obtained via devgetbyname() which can return NULL if the requested interface name does not exist. However, the subsequent slavedbg() call is placed before the NULL check: slavedev = devgetbyname(net, ifr->ifrslave); slavedbg(bonddev, slavedev, "slavedev=%p:\n", slavedev); //here if (!slavedev) return -ENODEV; The slavedbg() macro expands to netdevdbg(bonddev, "(slave %s): " fmt, (slavedev)->name, ...) which unconditionally dereferences slavedev->name before the NULL check is performed. This results in a NULL pointer dereference kernel oops when a user calls bonding ioctl (e.g. SIOCBONDENSLAVE, SIOCBONDRELEASE, etc.) with a non-existent slave interface name. This is reachable from userspace via the bonding ioctl interface with CAPNETADMIN capability, making it a potential local denial-of-service vector. Fix by moving the slavedbg() call after the NULL check.

In Linux kernel bonding's bond_do_ioctl(), move the slave_dbg() call to after the if (!slave_dev) NULL check so slave_dev->name is not dereferenced when __dev_get_by_name() returns NULL.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who can trigger this issue?
A local userspace process with CAP_NET_ADMIN can reach the vulnerable bonding ioctl path. An attacker must be able to issue bonding ioctls against a bonding device.
What input is required to cause the crash?
The caller supplies a non-existent slave interface name to a bonding ioctl, such as SIOCBONDENSLAVE or SIOCBONDRELEASE. The kernel then dereferences the missing interface pointer while producing debug output.
What is the practical impact?
The issue can cause a kernel NULL-pointer dereference and kernel oops, creating a local denial-of-service condition. The provided information does not indicate confidentiality or integrity impact.
How can I determine whether a system is exposed?
Systems using one of the listed Ubuntu kernel packages may be exposed if the bonding ioctl interface is available to a process with CAP_NET_ADMIN. Affected behavior is indicated by a kernel oops when a bonding ioctl is invoked with a slave interface name that does not exist.
