UBUNTU-CVE-2026-63822: Double Free
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: ath11k: fix warning when unbinding If there is an error during some initialization related to firmware, the buffers dp->txring[i].txstatus are released. However this is released again when the device is unbinded (ath11kpci), and we get: WARNING: CPU: 0 PID: 6231 at mm/slub.c:4368 freelargekmalloc+0x57/0x90 Call Trace: freelargekmalloc ath11kdpfree ath11kcoredeinit ath11kpciremove ... The issue is always reproducible from a VM because the MSI addressing initialization is failing. In order to fix the issue, just set the buffers to NULL after releasing in order to avoid the double free.

In ath11k, set dp->tx_ring[i].tx_status buffers to NULL immediately after releasing them to prevent a double free when unbinding ath11k_pci.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are realistically exposed to this issue?
The issue affects the ath11k Wi-Fi driver in the listed Ubuntu kernel packages. It is triggered when firmware-related initialization fails and the device is later unbound; the reported reproduction occurs in a VM where MSI addressing initialization fails.
What condition is required to trigger the double free?
An error must occur during firmware-related initialization after the driver has allocated tx_status buffers. Those buffers are freed on the initialization-error path and then freed again during ath11k PCI device removal or unbinding.
How can I tell whether this is occurring on a system?
The described symptom is a kernel WARNING at free_large_kmalloc, with a call trace including ath11k_dp_free, ath11k_core_deinit, and ath11k_pci_remove. The warning may appear when the ath11k PCI device is unbound after failed initialization.
