UBUNTU-CVE-2026-63913: High severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability

·
Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: conntrack: tcp: do not force CLOSE on invalid-seq RST without direction check An unintended behavior in the TCP conntrack state machine allows a connection to be forced into the CLOSE state using an RST packet with an invalid sequence number. Specifically, after a SYN packet is observed, an RST with an invalid SEQ can transition the conntrack entry to TCPCONNTRACKCLOSE, regardless of whether the RST corresponds to the expected reply direction. The relevant code path assumes the RST is a response to an outgoing SYN, but does not validate packet direction or ensure that a matching SYN was actually sent in the opposite direction. As a result, a crafted packet sequence consisting of a SYN followed by an invalid-sequence RST can prematurely terminate an active NAT entry. This makes connection teardown easier than intended. So, tighten the state transition logic to ensure that RST-triggered CLOSE transitions only occur when the RST is a valid response to a previously observed SYN in the correct direction.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Which systems are exposed to this issue?

Ubuntu systems using the listed Linux kernel packages are affected, including linux, linux-fips, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-aws-fips, linux-azure-fips, linux-gcp, and linux-gcp-fips. Exposure is relevant where TCP connection tracking and NAT state are in use.

2

What does an attacker need to exploit it?

An attacker needs to send crafted TCP traffic consisting of a SYN followed by an RST with an invalid sequence number. No authentication or user interaction is required, and the attack can be performed over the network.

3

What is the practical impact?

The crafted traffic can force a conntrack entry into the CLOSE state prematurely, terminating an active NAT entry. This makes teardown of tracked TCP connections easier than intended and can cause availability disruption.

4

How can I determine whether a connection may have been affected?

Affected behavior is indicated by an active NAT-tracked TCP connection being moved to the conntrack CLOSE state after a SYN and an invalid-sequence RST, including when the RST is not in the expected reply direction. The provided information does not specify a log signature or detection command.
