UBUNTU-CVE-2026-63934: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: iio: gyro: itg3200: fix i2c read into the wrong stack location itg3200readallchannels() takes be16 buf' as a parameter and fills the i2cmsg destination as (char )&buf'. Since buf' is the parameter (a pointer), &buf' is the address of the local pointer slot on the stack of itg3200readallchannels(), not the address of the caller's scan buffer. The (char ) cast hides the type mismatch. i2ctransfer() therefore writes ITG3200SCANELEMENTS sizeof(s16) = 8 bytes into the parameter's stack slot, which is discarded when the function returns. The caller's scan buffer in itg3200triggerhandler() is never written to, so iiopushtobufferswithtimestamp() pushes uninitialised stack contents to userspace via /dev/iio:deviceX every scan -- both a functional bug (no actual gyroscope or temperature data is delivered through the triggered buffer) and an information leak. The non-buffered readraw() path is unaffected: it goes through itg3200readregs16() which uses &out' on a local s16 value, where that is correct. Drop the spurious &' so the i2c read writes into the caller's buffer.

In itg3200_read_all_channels(), remove the spurious address-of operator so the i2c_msg destination uses (char *)buf rather than (char *)&buf, causing the I2C read to write into the caller's scan buffer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is exposed to the information leak?
Systems using the ITG3200 gyroscope driver with triggered IIO buffering can expose uninitialized kernel stack contents to userspace through /dev/iio:deviceX. The non-buffered read_raw() path is unaffected.
What access does an attacker need to obtain leaked data?
An attacker needs access to the affected IIO character device, /dev/iio:deviceX, and must be able to obtain data from the driver's triggered buffer. The described leak occurs each time the buffer is scanned.
How can I tell whether the affected path is in use?
Check whether the system uses the itg3200 driver and reads sensor data through a triggered IIO buffer exposed as /dev/iio:deviceX. If data is obtained only through the non-buffered read_raw() interface, the affected path is not used.
What can be done if an update cannot be applied immediately?
Avoid using the ITG3200 triggered buffer and restrict untrusted users' access to the relevant /dev/iio:deviceX device. Using the non-buffered read_raw() path does not trigger the issue.
