UBUNTU-CVE-2026-63948: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability

Q: What systems are affected by this issue?

The issue applies to the listed Ubuntu kernel packages: linux, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-azure-fde, linux-gcp, linux-gke, linux-ibm, and linux-realtime. The affected code is in the Linux kernel Bluetooth L2CAP subsystem.

Q: What conditions are needed to trigger the leak?

A Bluetooth L2CAP channel timeout must run after the channel's connection pointer has become NULL. In that path, the timeout handler previously returned without releasing the channel reference acquired when its delayed timer work was scheduled.

Q: What is the impact of successful triggering?

Each occurrence leaks an L2CAP channel reference, preventing that channel object from being released. The provided information describes a resource leak rather than code execution or data exposure.

Q: How is the issue fixed?

The fix releases the L2CAP channel reference with l2cap_chan_put() before the timeout handler returns when chan->conn is NULL.

Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Bluetooth: L2CAP: fix chan ref leak in l2capchantimeout() on !conn setchantimer() takes a l2capchan reference via l2capchanhold() before scheduling the delayed work. The normal path in l2capchantimeout() drops this reference with l2capchanput() at the end, but the early return when chan->conn is NULL skips the put, leaking the reference. Add the missing l2capchanput() before the early return.

Frequently Asked Questions

What systems are affected by this issue?

The issue applies to the listed Ubuntu kernel packages: linux, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-azure-fde, linux-gcp, linux-gke, linux-ibm, and linux-realtime. The affected code is in the Linux kernel Bluetooth L2CAP subsystem.

What conditions are needed to trigger the leak?

A Bluetooth L2CAP channel timeout must run after the channel's connection pointer has become NULL. In that path, the timeout handler previously returned without releasing the channel reference acquired when its delayed timer work was scheduled.

What is the impact of successful triggering?

Each occurrence leaks an L2CAP channel reference, preventing that channel object from being released. The provided information describes a resource leak rather than code execution or data exposure.

How is the issue fixed?

The fix releases the L2CAP channel reference with l2cap_chan_put() before the timeout handler returns when chan->conn is NULL.
