UBUNTU-CVE-2026-63964: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: usb: typec: ucsi: ccg: reject firmware images without a ':' record header doflash() locates the first .cyacd record with p = strnchr(fw->data, fw->size, ':'); while (p < eof) { s = strnchr(p + 1, eof - p - 1, ':'); ... } If the firmware image contains no ':' byte, strnchr() returns NULL. NULL compares less than the valid kernel pointer eof, so the loop body runs and strnchr() is called with p + 1 == (void )1 and a length of roughly (unsigned long)eof, causing a wonderful crash. The notsignedfw fallthrough earlier in doflash() and the chip-state branches in ccgfwupdateneeded() allow an unsigned blob to reach this loop, so a root user who can place a crafted file under /lib/firmware and write the doflash sysfs attribute can trigger the oops. Bail out with -EINVAL when the initial strnchr() returns NULL.

In the Linux kernel usb: typec: ucsi: ccg do_flash() path, reject firmware images without a ':' record header by returning -EINVAL when the initial strnchr() returns NULL.
Event History
Frequently Asked Questions
Who can realistically trigger this issue?
A local root user who can place a crafted firmware file under /lib/firmware and write to the do_flash sysfs attribute can trigger the kernel oops. The provided information does not indicate that unprivileged or remote users can exploit it directly.
What malformed firmware content is required to cause the crash?
The firmware image must contain no ':' byte. In that case, the initial search for a .cyacd record header returns NULL, but the flashing routine continues and dereferences an invalid pointer.
Are unsigned firmware files relevant to exploitation?
Yes. The described control flow can allow an unsigned firmware blob to reach the vulnerable parsing loop through the not_signed_fw path and chip-state branches in ccg_fw_update_needed().
Which Ubuntu kernel package families are listed as affected?
The listed software includes ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, ubuntu/linux-gcp, and ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips.
What should be restricted until the fix is deployed?
Restrict write access to the do_flash sysfs attribute and prevent untrusted users or processes from placing firmware files in /lib/firmware. The corrected behavior rejects firmware images with no ':' record header with -EINVAL.
