UBUNTU-CVE-2026-64244: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drivers/base/memory: set mem->altmap after successful device registration If addmemoryblock() fails at xastore() (under memory pressure for example), deviceunregister() is called, which eventually triggers memoryblockrelease() with mem->altmap still set, causing a WARNON(mem->altmap). This was triggered by modifying virtio-mem driver. Fix this by delaying the assignment of mem->altmap until after addmemoryblock() has succeeded.

Delay assigning mem->altmap until after __add_memory_block() has successfully completed, so a failed xa_store() cannot trigger device_unregister() with mem->altmap still set.
Linux kernel drivers/base/memory mem->altmap assignment = Assign after __add_memory_block() succeeds
Event History
Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions are required to trigger this issue?
The failure path requires __add_memory_block() to fail during xa_store(), which can occur under memory pressure. The described trigger involved modifying the virtio-mem driver.
What is the practical impact if the issue is triggered?
The failure path can call memory_block_release() while mem->altmap is still set, resulting in a WARN_ON(mem->altmap). The provided severity vector rates availability impact as high, with no confidentiality or integrity impact.
Who can exploit this vulnerability?
The supplied CVSS vector indicates local access and low privileges are required, with no user interaction required. The affected Ubuntu kernel package list includes riscv, realtime, azure, gcp, azure-fde, gke, hwe-edge, and gkeop variants.
