UBUNTU-CVE-2026-64275: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-aws vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Input: elani2c - prevent division by zero and arithmetic underflow The Elan I2C touchpad driver queries the device for its physical dimensions and trace counts to calculate the device resolution and width. However, if the device firmware or device tree provides invalid zero values for xtraces or ytraces, it results in a fatal division-by-zero exception leading to a kernel panic during device probe. Add checks to ensure these parameters are non-zero before performing the division. If invalid trace values are detected, fall back to a safe default of 1. Additionally, prevent an arithmetic underflow in the touch reporting logic. Previously, if the calculated or fallback width was smaller than ETPFWIDTHREDUCE (90), the subtraction would underflow, resulting in a massive unsigned integer being reported to userspace. Clamp the adjusted width to a minimum of 0 to safely handle small physical dimensions and fallback scenarios. Completing the probe with safe fallback values ensures the sysfs nodes are created, keeping the firmware update path intact so a recovery firmware can be flashed to the device.

In the Linux kernel elan_i2c touchpad driver, validate x_traces and y_traces before any division; when either value is zero or otherwise invalid, fall back to the safe default value 1 so device probing can complete and sysfs nodes are created.
- Compensating control
In the elan_i2c touch reporting logic, clamp the adjusted width to a minimum of 0 before reporting it, preventing arithmetic underflow when the width is smaller than ETP_FWIDTH_REDUCE (90).

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems using an Elan I2C touchpad and an affected Ubuntu kernel package are exposed during touchpad device probing. The listed Ubuntu kernel variants include linux, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-gcp, and their specified FIPS variants.
What must an attacker or triggering condition provide?
The issue is triggered when the touchpad firmware or device tree supplies zero values for the X or Y trace count. Exploitation requires local access with low privileges according to the supplied vector; no user interaction is required.
What is the impact of invalid touchpad parameters?
Zero trace counts can cause a division-by-zero exception and kernel panic during device probe, producing a denial of service. A separate width-calculation underflow can report an excessively large unsigned width value to userspace.
What happens after the fix when trace values are invalid?
The driver uses a safe fallback value of 1 for invalid zero trace counts and clamps adjusted touch width to a minimum of 0. Probe can then complete and create sysfs nodes, preserving the path for flashing recovery firmware.
