UBUNTU-CVE-2026-64340: Use After Free
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: USB: legousbtower: fix use-after-free on disconnect race mutexunlock() may access the mutex structure after releasing the lock and therefore cannot be used to manage lifetime of objects directly (unlike spinlocks and refcounts). [1][2] Use a kref to release the driver data to avoid use-after-free in mutexunlock() when release() races with disconnect(). [1] a51749ab34d9 ("locking/mutex: Document that mutexunlock() is non-atomic") [2] 2b9d9e0a9ba0 ("locking/mutex: Clarify that mutexunlock(), and most other sleeping locks, can still use the lock object after it's unlocked")

In the Linux kernel USB legousbtower driver, use a kref to manage and release driver data so that release() racing with disconnect() cannot cause a use-after-free in mutex_unlock().

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
The affected software list includes Ubuntu linux, linux-fips, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-aws-fips, linux-azure-fips, linux-gcp, and linux-gcp-fips kernel packages. The vulnerable code is in the legousbtower USB driver, so exposure depends on that driver being used with the relevant USB device.
What conditions are required to trigger the vulnerability?
Exploitation requires local access with low privileges. The issue occurs when the driver's release path races with USB device disconnect handling, causing a use-after-free around mutex unlock and driver-data lifetime management.
How can I tell whether this issue is relevant to a host?
Check whether the host is running one of the listed Ubuntu kernel package families and whether the legousbtower USB driver is in use. Also determine whether a LEGO USB Tower device can be connected or disconnected on the system, since the described race involves device disconnect handling.
