UBUNTU-CVE-2026-64345: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-aws vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: usb: gadget: fprinter: take kref only for successful open printeropen() returns -EBUSY when the character device is already open, but it increments dev->kref regardless of the return value. VFS does not call ->release() for a failed open, so every rejected second open permanently leaks one reference. Move krefget() into the successful-open branch.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who can trigger the reference leak?
A local user or process that can attempt to open the USB gadget printer character device can trigger it. The leak occurs when the device is already open and subsequent open attempts are rejected with -EBUSY.
What is the practical impact of repeated failed opens?
Each rejected second open permanently leaks one device reference because VFS does not invoke the release handler after a failed open. The available data identifies an availability impact, but does not quantify the resource exhaustion or resulting behavior.
How can I tell whether a system is exposed to the triggering condition?
The condition requires use of the Linux USB gadget printer function and an already-open printer character device. Systems not using that gadget printer interface would not encounter the described failed-second-open path.
