UBUNTU-CVE-2026-64373: Null Pointer Dereference
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: cpufreq: Fix hotplug-suspend race during reboot During system reboot, cpufreqsuspend() is called via the kernelrestart() -> deviceshutdown() path. Unlike the normal system suspend path, the reboot path does not call freezeprocesses(), so userspace processes and kernel threads remain active. This allows CPU hotplug operations to run concurrently with cpufreqsuspend(). The original code has no synchronization with CPU hotplug, leading to a race condition where governordata can be freed by the hotplug path while cpufreqsuspend() is still accessing it, resulting in a null pointer dereference: Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference Call Trace: dokernelfault+0x28/0x3c cpufreqsuspend+0xdc/0x160 deviceshutdown+0x18/0x200 kernelrestart+0x40/0x80 arm64sysreboot+0x1b0/0x200 Fix this by adding cpusreadlock()/cpusreadunlock() to cpufreqsuspend() to block CPU hotplug operations while suspend is in progress. Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions are required to trigger the issue?
The race requires a system reboot while cpufreq_suspend() is running and a CPU hotplug operation occurs concurrently. Because the reboot path does not freeze userspace processes or kernel threads, those active components can initiate or participate in CPU hotplug activity during reboot.
What is the practical impact if the race is triggered?
CPU hotplug can free governor_data while cpufreq_suspend() still uses it, causing a kernel null pointer dereference. The reported consequence is a system crash during reboot.
Are systems affected during ordinary system suspend?
The described race is specific to the reboot path, where cpufreq_suspend() runs without freeze_processes(). The normal system suspend path freezes processes, which is identified as the relevant difference.
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?
The listed packages are ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-aws, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-oracle, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, and ubuntu/linux-azure-fips.
What does the fix change?
The fix adds cpus_read_lock() and cpus_read_unlock() around cpufreq_suspend(). This prevents CPU hotplug operations from running while the suspend operation is in progress.
