UBUNTU-CVE-2026-64388: Low severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: smb/client: fix chown/chgrp with SMB3 POSIX Extensions Ownership (chown) and group (chgrp) modifications were being ignored when mounting with SMB3 POSIX Extensions unless CIFSMOUNTCIFSACL or CIFSMOUNTMODEFROMSID were also explicitly set. Fix this by checking for posixextensions in cifssetattrnounix() when updating UID and GID, ensuring that idmodetocifsacl() is called to map and set the ownership/group information on the server.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is affected by this issue?
Systems using the listed Ubuntu kernel packages and mounting SMB shares with SMB3 POSIX Extensions may be affected. The issue applies when ownership or group changes are made through chown or chgrp.
What conditions are required for the problem to occur?
The SMB mount must use SMB3 POSIX Extensions, and CIFS_MOUNT_CIFS_ACL and CIFS_MOUNT_MODE_FROM_SID must not also be explicitly set. Under those conditions, UID and GID changes can be ignored.
What is the practical impact?
Requested ownership and group modifications on the SMB server may not be applied, which can leave files with unintended ownership or group settings. The provided severity is low, with local access and low privileges required and user interaction required.
How can administrators check whether they are affected?
Review SMB mount configuration for use of SMB3 POSIX Extensions and determine whether CIFS_MOUNT_CIFS_ACL or CIFS_MOUNT_MODE_FROM_SID is explicitly enabled. On matching mounts, test whether chown or chgrp changes are reflected on the server.
