UBUNTU-CVE-2026-64482: Null Pointer Dereference
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: gus: check sndctlnew1() return value sndctlnew1() can return NULL when memory allocation fails. sndgf1pcmvolumecontrol() does not check the return value before dereferencing kctl->id.index, which can lead to a NULL pointer dereference. Add a NULL check after sndctlnew1() and return -ENOMEM if it fails.

In snd_gf1_pcm_volume_control(), add a NULL check after snd_ctl_new1(); if it returns NULL, return -ENOMEM before dereferencing kctl->id.index.
Event History
Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions are required to trigger this issue?
The affected ALSA GUS code must attempt to create a PCM volume control while snd_ctl_new1() fails because memory allocation fails. The vulnerability is triggered when the resulting NULL pointer is dereferenced.
What is the likely impact of successful exploitation?
A failed allocation can lead to a kernel NULL pointer dereference. The provided data does not describe impacts beyond that failure condition.
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?
The listed packages are ubuntu/linux-riscv, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-azure-fde, ubuntu/linux-gke, ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge, and ubuntu/linux-gkeop.
How does the fix prevent the failure?
The fix checks whether snd_ctl_new1() returned NULL before accessing the control object's id.index field. If allocation failed, the code returns -ENOMEM instead of dereferencing the NULL pointer.
