UBUNTU-CVE-2026-64483: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: firewire: isight: bound the sample count to the packet payload isightpacket() takes the frame count from the device iso packet and checks it only against the device claimed iso length. count = be32tocpu(payload->samplecount); if (likely(count <= (length - 16) / 4)) isightsamples(isight, payload->samples, count); length is the iso header datalength. It can be up to 0xffff. So the gate allows a count up to about 16379. isightsamples() then copies count frames out of payload->samples into the PCM DMA buffer. payload->samples holds only 2 MAXFRAMESPERPACKET values. The device multiplexes two samples per frame. A count past MAXFRAMESPERPACKET reads past the payload. A count past the buffer size writes past runtime->dmaarea. The smallest PCM buffer is larger than MAXFRAMESPERPACKET. Bounding the count to MAXFRAMESPERPACKET keeps both the read and the write in range. A malicious or faulty Apple iSight on the FireWire bus reaches this during a normal capture. Add the MAXFRAMESPERPACKET bound to the gate.

In ALSA FireWire isight_packet(), bound the device-provided sample count to MAX_FRAMES_PER_PACKET in the validation gate, alongside the existing payload-length check, before copying samples; this keeps both payload reads and runtime->dma_area writes in range.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is exposed to this issue?
Systems using the affected Ubuntu kernel packages are exposed when they perform audio capture from an Apple iSight device on the FireWire bus. The issue can be triggered by a malicious or faulty device during normal capture.
What does an attacker need to exploit it?
An attacker needs control of, or the ability to present, an Apple iSight device on the system's FireWire bus that sends a packet with an oversized sample count. No special capture mode is described; the vulnerable path is reached during normal capture.
What happens when the malformed packet is processed?
An oversized sample count can cause reads beyond the packet's samples array and writes beyond the PCM DMA buffer. The affected function previously accepted counts based on the claimed ISO packet length rather than the maximum frames actually present in the payload.
How can the issue be mitigated before an updated kernel is deployed?
Avoid capturing audio from untrusted or potentially faulty Apple iSight devices connected through FireWire. Limiting physical access to the FireWire bus reduces the opportunity for a malicious device to send crafted packets.
