UBUNTU-CVE-2026-64486: Null Pointer Dereference
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: cmipci: check sndctlnew1() return value sndctlnew1() can return NULL when memory allocation fails. sndcmipcispdifcontrols() does not check the return value before dereferencing kctl->id.device, which can lead to a NULL pointer dereference. Add NULL checks after sndctlnew1() calls and return -ENOMEM if any fails.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Ubuntu kernel package families are identified as affected?
The listed package families are ubuntu/linux-riscv, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-azure-fde, ubuntu/linux-gke, ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge, and ubuntu/linux-gkeop. No affected or fixed version information is provided.
What condition leads to the failure?
The failure requires snd_ctl_new1() to return NULL because memory allocation fails while SPDIF controls are being created. The affected code then dereferences the returned control pointer without checking it.
What is the expected impact when the condition occurs?
The result can be a kernel NULL pointer dereference. The provided information does not state whether this condition can be induced by an unprivileged, local, or remote attacker.
Is there an upstream correction for this issue?
Yes. The issue is described as resolved in the Linux kernel by adding NULL checks after snd_ctl_new1() calls and returning -ENOMEM when allocation fails.
