UBUNTU-CVE-2026-64514: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-azure vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: userfaultfd: gate mustwait writability check on ptepresent() userfaultfdmustwait() and userfaultfdhugemustwait() read the PTE without taking the page table lock and then apply ptewrite() / hugeptewrite() to it. Those accessors decode bits from the present encoding only; on a swap or migration entry they read the offset bits that happen to share the same position and return an undefined result. The intent of the check is "is this fault still WP-blocked?". A non-marker swap entry means the page is in transit -- the userfault context the original fault delivered against is no longer the same, and the swap-in or migration completion path will re-deliver a fresh fault if userspace still needs to handle it. Worst case under the current code the garbage write bit says "wait", and the thread stays asleep until a UFFDIOWAKE that may never arrive. Gate the writability check on ptepresent() so the lockless re-check only inspects present-PTE bits when the entry is actually present. The non-present, non-marker case returns "don't wait" and lets the fault path retry.

In userfaultfd_must_wait() and userfaultfd_huge_must_wait(), gate the pte_write() / huge_pte_write() writability check on pte_present(), so the lockless re-check only inspects present-PTE bits.

Frequently Asked Questions
What runtime conditions are needed to trigger the issue?
The issue involves a userfaultfd write-protection fault whose must-wait check races with a page becoming a non-marker swap or migration entry. This can occur while the page is in transit and the original userfault context is no longer the context that should handle the fault.
What is the practical impact of the faulty check?
The lockless check can interpret swap or migration entry offset bits as a writable bit. If that produces a result indicating the thread should wait, the faulting thread can remain asleep pending a UFFDIO_WAKE that may never occur.
How does the resolved behavior avoid the stalled thread?
The writability check is performed only when the page-table entry is present. For non-present, non-marker entries, the check returns that the thread should not wait, allowing the fault path to retry and permitting swap-in or migration completion to deliver a fresh fault if needed.
