UBUNTU-CVE-2026-64534: Use After Free
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nvmet-tcp: check INITFAILED before nvmetrequninit in digest error path In nvmettcptryrecvddgst(), when a data digest mismatch is detected, nvmetrequninit() is called unconditionally. However, if the command arrived via the nvmettcphandlereqfailure() path, nvmetreqinit() had returned false and percpureftrygetlive() was never executed. The unconditional percpurefput() inside nvmetrequninit() then causes a refcount underflow, leading to a WARNING in percpurefswitchtoatomicrcu, a use-after-free diagnostic, and eventually a permanent workqueue deadlock. Check cmd->flags & NVMETTCPFINITFAILED before calling nvmetrequninit(), matching the existing pattern in nvmettcpexecuterequest().

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems running an affected listed Ubuntu kernel package are exposed when the NVMe target TCP path processes a command that reaches the request-failure path and then encounters a data-digest mismatch. The affected package list includes ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-realtime, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-azure-fde, ubuntu/linux-gke, ubuntu/linux-riscv, and ubuntu/linux-gkeop.
What does an attacker need to trigger the failure?
The vulnerable path is network-reachable (AV:N) and requires neither privileges nor user interaction. Triggering it involves causing a data-digest mismatch for a command whose request initialization had already failed.
What happens when the issue is triggered?
The unconditional request cleanup can perform a reference-count decrement without a matching acquisition. This causes a refcount underflow, use-after-free diagnostic, and eventually a permanent workqueue deadlock, with potential impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
What is the remediation?
Apply an Ubuntu kernel update containing the resolved fix. The fix avoids calling nvmet_req_uninit() when the command has the NVMET_TCP_F_INIT_FAILED flag set.
