UBUNTU-CVE-2026-64538: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ipv6: Fix null-ptr-deref in fib6nhmtuchange(). fib6nhmtuchange() re-fetches idev via in6devget(arg->dev) and dereferences idev->cnf.mtu6 without a NULL check. addrconfifdown() clears dev->ip6ptr with RCUINITPOINTER() after rt6disableip() has released tb6lock, so the RA-driven MTU walk can observe a NULL idev and oops. The caller rt6mtuchangeroute() guards its own in6devget(), but this re-fetch is unguarded; nexthop-backed routes survive addrconfifdown()'s flush, so the walk still reaches it after ip6ptr is nulled. Return 0 when idev is NULL, matching rt6mtuchangeroute() and the fib6mtu() fix in commit 5ad509c1fdad ("ipv6: Fix null-ptr-deref in fib6mtu()."). Oops: general protection fault, ... Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions are required to trigger the crash?
The failure requires a race in which addrconf_ifdown() clears the IPv6 device state (dev->ip6_ptr) after the route-table lock is released while an RA-driven MTU update walks routes. A surviving nexthop-backed route can then cause fib6_nh_mtu_change() to dereference a NULL IPv6 device pointer.
What is the practical impact?
The reported outcome is a kernel oops/general protection fault caused by a NULL-pointer dereference in fib6_nh_mtu_change(). This can disrupt the affected system's networking or system operation.
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?
The listed packages are ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-gcp, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips, and ubuntu/linux-realtime.
How can I identify whether this issue has occurred?
Kernel logs may show a general protection fault or KASAN NULL-pointer dereference in fib6_nh_mtu_change, with a stack including rt6_mtu_change_route, __fib6_clean_all, rt6_mtu_change, and ndisc_router_discovery.
