UBUNTU-CVE-2026-64547: High severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: usb: net1080: validate packetlen before pad-byte access in rxfixup For an even packetlen, net1080rxfixup() reads the pad byte at skb->data[packetlen] before the skb->len != packetlen check further down, and packetlen is only bounded against NCMAXPACKET. A malicious NetChip 1080 device can send a short frame advertising a large even packetlen (e.g. 0x4000), so the pad-byte read lands past the end of the skb: BUG: KASAN: slab-out-of-bounds in net1080rxfixup Read of size 1 at addr ffff8880106c83c6 by task ksoftirqd/0/14 ... net1080rxfixup (drivers/net/usb/net1080.c:384) usbnetbh (drivers/net/usb/usbnet.c:1589) processonework (kernel/workqueue.c:3322) bhworker (kernel/workqueue.c:3708) taskletaction (kernel/softirq.c:965) handlesoftirqs (kernel/softirq.c:622) ... Reject the frame when packetlen >= skb->len before reading.

Frequently Asked Questions
What systems are realistically exposed to this issue?
Systems running an affected Ubuntu kernel package are exposed when they use the NetChip 1080 USB network driver with a NetChip 1080 USB device. The listed package families include linux, linux-fips, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-gcp, and their listed FIPS variants.
What must an attacker control to trigger the vulnerability?
An attacker needs to present a malicious NetChip 1080 USB device capable of sending a short network frame that advertises a large, even packet length. No privileges or user interaction are required according to the supplied severity vector.
What is the likely impact of successful exploitation?
The malformed frame causes an out-of-bounds one-byte read in net1080_rx_fixup() before the frame length is validated. The provided severity vector rates confidentiality and availability impact as high, while integrity impact is listed as none.
How can this be mitigated before an update is applied?
Avoid connecting untrusted NetChip 1080 USB devices to affected systems. The vulnerable path is the NetChip 1080 USB network receive handler, so preventing use of such devices prevents attacker-controlled frames from reaching it.
