UBUNTU-CVE-2026-64562: High severity ubuntu/linux-aws vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: KVM: nVMX: Hide shadow VMCS right after VMCLEAR freenested() frees the shadow VMCS while vmcs01 still points to it. But because it is asynchronous with respect to loadedvmcsclear(), the vCPU might migrate before the pointer is cleared and loadedvmcsclear() may then execute VMCLEAR. The VMCS needs to stay attached until its explicit VMCLEAR completes, but then it can be hidden and the page safely freed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are in scope?
The affected software list includes Ubuntu linux, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-gcp, and the corresponding FIPS kernel packages. The flaw is in KVM nested VMX handling, so exposure is relevant where KVM nested virtualization is in use.
What access does an attacker need?
The supplied vector rates the attack as local, requires no privileges and no user interaction, and has high attack complexity with an additional attack requirement. An attacker would need to satisfy the specific runtime conditions involving nested VMX and vCPU migration.
What is the likely security impact if exploitation succeeds?
The vector indicates high impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability, including subsequent-system impacts. The issue involves a shadow VMCS being freed while another VMCS pointer can still reference it before an explicit VMCLEAR completes.
Can the provided information determine whether a system is already patched?
No fixed package versions are provided. Check the installed Ubuntu kernel package against the Ubuntu CVE advisory for CVE-2026-64562.
