UBUNTU-CVE-2026-64603: Null Pointer Dereference
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: platform/x86: intel-hid: Protect ACPI notify handler against recursion Since commit e2ffcda16290 ("ACPI: OSL: Allow Notify () handlers to run on all CPUs") ACPI notify handlers like the intel-hid notifyhandler() may run on multiple CPU cores racing with themselves. On convertibles and detachables (matched by DMI chassis-type 31 and 32 in dmiautoaddswitch[]) the SWTABLETMODE input device is registered lazily from notifyhandler() on the first tablet-mode event, via intelhidswitchessetup(). When two such events race on different CPUs both can pass the !priv->switches check and register the priv->switches input device twice, resulting in a duplicate sysfs entry and a subsequent NULL pointer dereference. This is the same class of bug fixed by commit e075c3b13a0a ("platform/x86: intel-vbtn: Protect ACPI notify handler against recursion") for the sibling intel-vbtn driver. Protect intel-hid notifyhandler() from racing with itself with a mutex to fix this.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
The affected code path applies to convertible and detachable systems identified by DMI chassis types 31 and 32, where the intel-hid driver lazily registers the tablet-mode switch input device. The listed Ubuntu kernel packages are linux-riscv, linux-realtime, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-azure-fde, linux-gke, linux-hwe-edge, and linux-gkeop.
What conditions are needed to trigger the crash?
Two tablet-mode ACPI notification events must run concurrently on different CPU cores before the intel-hid driver's switch input device has been initialized. Both handlers can then register the device, leading to a duplicate sysfs entry followed by a NULL pointer dereference.
Is there an interim mitigation if an updated kernel cannot be deployed immediately?
The provided information identifies tablet-mode events on affected convertible or detachable hardware as the trigger condition. It does not provide a supported configuration workaround; deploying the kernel fix that serializes the notify handler is the documented resolution.
