UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68125: High severity ubuntu/linux-aws vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mac802154: llsec: reject frames shorter than the authentication tag llsecdodecryptauth() computes the associated-data length for the AEAD request as assoclen += datalen - authlen; where datalen is the number of bytes after the MAC header and authlen (4, 8 or 16) is the length of the authentication tag. Nothing verifies that the frame actually carries at least authlen payload bytes. A secured frame whose payload is shorter than the tag makes datalen - authlen negative; assoclen is then passed to aeadrequestsetad() as an unsigned value close to 4 GiB, so cryptoaeaddecrypt() walks far off the end of the scatterlist that only spans the real frame. The frame is fully attacker-controlled and reaches this path from any IEEE 802.15.4 peer in radio range. Reject frames whose payload is shorter than the authentication tag before the subtraction. Dynamically reproduced on a KASAN kernel as a general-protection-fault in the AEAD scatterwalk, and the fix confirmed.

In mac802154 llsec_do_decrypt_auth(), reject secured frames whose payload is shorter than the authentication tag (authlen 4, 8, or 16) before computing datalen - authlen or passing assoclen to aead_request_set_ad().

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems running an affected listed Ubuntu kernel are exposed if they use IEEE 802.15.4 and can receive frames from an attacker-controlled peer in radio range. The vulnerable path is in the mac802154 link-layer security handling.
What does an attacker need to exploit it?
An attacker needs only to be an IEEE 802.15.4 peer within radio range that can send a crafted secured frame with a payload shorter than its authentication tag. No privileges or user interaction are required.
What is the likely impact of successful exploitation?
The malformed frame causes an unsigned length close to 4 GiB to be supplied to AEAD processing, leading the kernel to access beyond the real frame scatterlist. The issue was reproduced as a general-protection fault in AEAD scatterwalk, and the listed severity indicates confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact.
What should be done if patching cannot happen immediately?
Limit exposure to untrusted IEEE 802.15.4 peers by preventing them from coming within radio range or otherwise sending frames to affected devices. The supplied fix rejects secured frames whose payload is shorter than the authentication tag before the unsafe length calculation.
