UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68130: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ksmbd: defer destroyprevioussession() until after NTLM authentication In ntlmauthenticate(), destroyprevioussession() is called using a user pointer resolved from the client-supplied NTLM blob username field before the NTLMv2 response is validated. An authenticated attacker can set the NTLM blob username to match a victim account and set PreviousSessionId to the victim's session ID; destroyprevioussession() destroys the victim's session while ksmbddecodentlmsspauthblob() subsequently rejects the request with -EPERM. Move destroyprevioussession() and the previd assignment to after ksmbddecodentlmsspauthblob() returns success and use sess->user rather than the pre-authentication lookup result. This matches the ordering already used by krb5authenticate(), where destroyprevioussession() is called only after ksmbdkrb5authenticate() returns success.

In ksmbd ntlm_authenticate(), defer destroy_previous_session() and the prev_id assignment until ksmbd_decode_ntlmssp_auth_blob() returns success, and use sess->user rather than the pre-authentication user lookup result.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who can exploit this issue?
An authenticated attacker who can perform NTLM authentication to ksmbd can exploit it. The attacker needs to know or supply a victim account name and the victim's session ID in the authentication request.
What is the impact of a successful exploit?
The attacker can cause ksmbd to destroy a victim's existing session. The malicious NTLM authentication request is then rejected, but the victim session has already been removed.
Does exploitation require valid NTLMv2 authentication?
No. The vulnerable behavior occurs before the NTLMv2 response is validated, so the request can be rejected with -EPERM after the victim session is destroyed.
How does the fix prevent the issue?
The fix delays destruction of a previous session until NTLM authentication succeeds. It also uses the authenticated session user rather than the username resolved from the client-supplied NTLM blob.
