UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68142: Low severity ubuntu/linux-azure vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: geneve: require CAPNETADMIN in the device netns for changelink A tunnel changelink() operates on at most two netns, devnet(dev) and the sticky underlay netns geneve->net. They differ once the device is created in or moved to a netns other than the one the request runs in. The rtnl changelink path checks CAPNETADMIN only against devnet(dev), so a caller privileged there but not in geneve->net can rewrite a geneve device whose underlay lives in geneve->net. genevechangelink() applies the new configuration against geneve->net: genevelinkconfig() and the genevequiesce()/geneveunquiesce() pair reopen the underlay sockets in that netns (genevesockadd() uses geneve->net), so the same reasoning as the tunnel changelink series applies here. Gate genevechangelink() with rtnldevlinknetcapable(), at the top of the op before any attribute is parsed, matching ipgrechangelink() and the rest of the "require CAPNETADMIN in the device netns for changelink" series. Frequently Asked Questions
Who is realistically exposed to this issue?
Systems using Geneve tunnel devices are exposed when a device's current device network namespace differs from its sticky underlay network namespace. The issue requires a caller with CAP_NET_ADMIN in the device namespace but not in the underlay namespace.
What could an attacker do with the required access?
A caller meeting the namespace privilege condition can use the Geneve changelink path to rewrite the tunnel configuration. Applying that configuration can reopen the Geneve underlay sockets in the underlay network namespace.
Are unprivileged local users affected by default?
The provided information indicates that CAP_NET_ADMIN is required, so an unprivileged user without that capability cannot directly exploit the issue. Exploitation also depends on the relevant Geneve device and cross-namespace underlay arrangement being present.
How can administrators identify potentially affected configurations?
Review Geneve devices and determine whether they were created in or moved to a network namespace different from the namespace holding their sticky underlay. Configurations where a user has CAP_NET_ADMIN in the device namespace but lacks it in the underlay namespace match the described exposure condition.
