UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68143: High severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: slip: serialize receive against buffer reallocation slreallocbufs() replaces rbuff and updates buffsize while holding sl->lock. slipreceivebuf() reads those fields and writes through rbuff without holding the lock. An MTU change can therefore race with receive processing. An MTU shrink can expose the new smaller rbuff with the old larger bound, causing an out-of-bounds write. A receive callback which already loaded the old rbuff can instead continue writing after that buffer has been freed. Serialize receive processing with slreallocbufs() by holding sl->lock while consuming each receive batch.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems running the listed Ubuntu kernel packages are potentially exposed when the SLIP network driver is in use. The affected package families listed are linux, linux-fips, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-aws-fips, linux-azure-fips, linux-gcp, and linux-gcp-fips.
What conditions are required to trigger the vulnerability?
Exploitation requires local access with low privileges and does not require user interaction. The race occurs when an MTU change overlaps SLIP receive processing, allowing receive handling to use inconsistent or freed receive-buffer state.
What is the potential impact?
The race can cause an out-of-bounds write after an MTU shrink or a write through a receive buffer that has already been freed. The provided severity vector indicates high impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
