UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68146: Medium severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ftrace: Add global mutex to serialize traceparser access In ftrace, the traceparser structure is allocated and initialized when a trace file is opened, and is subsequently used across write and release handlers to parse user input. The affected handler paths and their specific functions are: - Open paths: ftraceregexopen(), ftracegraphopen() - Write paths: ftraceregexwrite(), ftracegraphwrite() - Release paths: ftraceregexrelease(), ftracegraphrelease() If userspace opens a trace file descriptor and shares it across multiple threads, concurrent write calls will race on the parser's internal state, specifically the 'idx', 'cont', and 'buffer' fields, leading to corrupted input or undefined behavior. Fix this by adding a global mutex, parserlock, to serialize all access to traceparser across write and release paths, preventing concurrent corruption of parser state.

Add a global mutex named parser_lock and acquire it to serialize all access to trace_parser across ftrace_regex_open(), ftrace_graph_open(), ftrace_regex_write(), ftrace_graph_write(), ftrace_regex_release(), and ftrace_graph_release().

Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions are required to trigger the race?
A userspace process must open an affected ftrace trace file and share that same file descriptor across multiple threads. Concurrent writes through the shared descriptor can race on the trace_parser state.
Which ftrace operations are involved?
The affected parser is created by ftrace_regex_open() or ftrace_graph_open(), used by ftrace_regex_write() or ftrace_graph_write(), and released by ftrace_regex_release() or ftrace_graph_release(). The fix serializes parser access in the write and release paths.
What is the impact of successful triggering?
Concurrent access can corrupt the parser's idx, cont, and buffer fields. This can result in corrupted input or undefined behavior.
Which Ubuntu kernel packages are listed as affected?
The listed software includes ubuntu/linux, ubuntu/linux-fips, ubuntu/linux-aws, ubuntu/linux-azure, ubuntu/linux-aws-fips, ubuntu/linux-azure-fips, ubuntu/linux-gcp, and ubuntu/linux-gcp-fips.
