UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68148: Use After Free
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fscrypt: Add missing superblock check in findorinsertdirectkey() The legacy 'fscryptdirectkeys' table caches master keys that are used by v1 encryption policies that have FSCRYPTPOLICYFLAGDIRECTKEY. It's just a global table for all filesystems (since the keys can be provided by the legacy process-subscribed keyrings mechanism, which makes it difficult to reuse superblock::smasterkeys). The entries in it ('struct fscryptdirectkey') do contain a superblock pointer, though, for passing to fscryptdestroyinlinecryptkey() when the last inode that references the key is evicted. However, when finding the fscryptdirectkey for an inode, we weren't actually comparing the superblock pointer. As a result, inodes with different superblocks could point to the same fscryptdirectkey. That could extend the lifetime of a fscryptdirectkey beyond the superblock it points to, causing a use-after-free later. Fix this by creating distinct fscryptdirectkey structs for distinct superblock structs. Note that this problem doesn't exist in the v2 policy equivalent ("per-mode keys"), since the data structures there are per superblock.

Update fscrypt_direct_key handling so distinct super_block structs receive distinct fscrypt_direct_key structs, and ensure find_or_insert_direct_key() compares the inode's super_block pointer when locating a key.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Exposure is limited to filesystems using fscrypt v1 encryption policies with FSCRYPT_POLICY_FLAG_DIRECT_KEY. The described issue does not affect the v2-policy equivalent, per-mode keys.
What access does an attacker need?
The severity vector indicates local access with low privileges is required and no user interaction is needed. Exploitation depends on causing inodes on different superblocks to share a cached legacy direct key.
How can I assess whether a system is using the affected configuration?
Check for fscrypt v1 policies configured with the DIRECT_KEY policy flag. Systems using v2 per-mode keys are not affected by the described key-sharing condition.
