UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68149: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability

Updated

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fs: preserve ACLDONTCACHE state in forgetcachedacl() The ACLDONTCACHE state is meant to be a constant state for the inode for filesystems that want to opt out of posix acl caching. Commit facd61053cff1 ("fuse: fixes after adapting to new posix acl api") used this facility to opt out of posix acl caching for fuse inodes with fuse server that does not negotiate FUSEPOSIXACL (fc->posixacl). The commit also takes care to gate the forgetallcachedacls() call in fusesetacl() on fc->posixacl because there is no need for it, but there are other placed in fuse code which call forgetallcachedacls() unconditional to fc->posixacl and those cause the loss of the ACLDONTCACHE state. This is not only a functional bug. Properly timed, a getacl() from this fuse filesystem can return a stale cached value, as was observed in tests, because setacl() does not invalidate the unintentional acl cache. We could fix this in fuse, but it actually makes no sense for the vfs helper forgetcachedacl() to invalidate the ACLDONTCACHE state, so let it not do that to fix fuse and future users of ACLDONTCACHE.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Which systems are exposed to this issue?

Systems using one of the listed Ubuntu kernel packages are affected where a FUSE filesystem is in use and its FUSE server does not negotiate FUSE_POSIX_ACL. The issue concerns POSIX ACL handling for those FUSE inodes.

2

What does an attacker need to exploit it?

The vector is local and requires low privileges, with no user interaction required. Exploitation depends on being able to perform suitably timed ACL operations against the affected FUSE filesystem.

3

What is the security impact?

A stale cached ACL value can be returned because ACL updates may fail to invalidate an unintended cache. The reported severity vector indicates high confidentiality and integrity impact, with no availability impact.

4

How can I determine whether this condition applies in my environment?

Check whether the system runs one of the listed Ubuntu kernel packages and uses FUSE filesystems whose servers do not negotiate FUSE_POSIX_ACL. The problematic behavior is associated with ACL cache invalidation during ACL operations on those filesystems.
