UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68155: High severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: libceph: Reject monmaps advertising zero monitors A message of type CEPHMSGMONMAP contains a monmap that is sent from a monitor to the client. This monmap contains information about the existing monitors in the cluster. Currently, a monmap indicating that there are zero monitors in the cluster is treated as valid. However, it is impossible to have zero monitors in the cluster and still receive a valid monmap from a monitor. Therefore, such a monmap must be corrupted and should be treated as invalid. Furthermore, a monmap with a monitor count of zero can subsequently crash the client when attempting to open a session with a monitor in opensession(). This happens because the "BUGON(monc->monmap->nummon < 1)" assertion in picknewmon() is triggered. This patch extends a check in cephmonmapdecode() to also reject arriving monmaps with nummon == 0 rather than only with nummon > CEPHMAXMON. [ idryomov: drop "log output for unusual values of nummon" part ]

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this denial-of-service condition?
Ubuntu systems using the affected Linux kernel packages are in scope, including linux, linux-fips, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-gcp, and their listed FIPS variants. The vulnerable code is the kernel's libceph client component.
What does an attacker need to do to trigger the crash?
An attacker must cause a Ceph client to receive a CEPH_MSG_MON_MAP message advertising zero monitors. Processing that invalid monmap can trigger a kernel assertion while the client attempts to open a monitor session, crashing the client.
Does exploitation require local access, credentials, or user interaction?
No. The supplied severity vector identifies network attack access, low attack complexity, no privileges required, and no user interaction.
How can I determine whether an incident may have occurred?
Look for a client crash associated with the libceph monitor-session path, particularly the BUG_ON assertion in pick_new_mon() caused by a monmap with num_mon below 1. The described trigger is receipt of a monitor map advertising zero monitors.
