UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68156: Use After Free
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: libceph: refresh auth->authorizerbuf{,len} after authorizer update cephxcreateauthorizer() caches au->buf->vec.iovbase and au->buf->vec.iovlen in struct cephauthhandshake. These cached values are then used by the messenger connect code when sending the authorizer. cephxupdateauthorizer() can rebuild the authorizer when a newer service ticket is available. If the rebuilt authorizer no longer fits in the existing buffer, cephxbuildauthorizer() drops its reference to au->buf and allocates a new one. If this is the final reference, cephbufferput() frees the old cephbuffer and its vec.iovbase, but auth->authorizerbuf still points at that freed memory. A subsequent msgr1 reconnect can therefore queue the stale pointer and trigger a KASAN slab-use-after-free in copyfromiter() while tcpsendmsg() copies the authorizer. Refresh auth->authorizerbuf and auth->authorizerbuflen after a successful authorizer rebuild so the messenger sends the current buffer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Systems running the listed Ubuntu Linux kernel packages are potentially exposed when they use the Ceph client code path involving authorizer updates and msgr1 reconnects. The affected package families listed are linux, linux-fips, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-aws-fips, linux-azure-fips, linux-gcp, and linux-gcp-fips.
What conditions trigger the use-after-free?
A newer Ceph service ticket must cause the authorizer to be rebuilt, and the rebuilt authorizer must no longer fit in its existing buffer so a replacement buffer is allocated. A subsequent msgr1 reconnect can then send the stale cached buffer pointer.
How does the issue manifest when triggered?
The stale authorizer pointer can be queued during messenger reconnect processing, causing a slab use-after-free while tcp_sendmsg() copies the authorizer in _copy_from_iter().
What is the relevant remediation?
Apply the kernel fix that refreshes auth->authorizer_buf and auth->authorizer_buf_len after a successful authorizer rebuild, ensuring the messenger sends the current buffer rather than freed memory.
