UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68165: Medium severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mm/damon/core: validate ranges in damonsetregions() DAMON core logic assumes zero length regions don't exist. However, a few DAMON API callers including DAMONSYSFS, DAMONRECLAIM and DAMONLRUSORT allow users to set empty monitoring target regions. This could result in WARNONCE() on CONFIGDAMONDEBUGSANITY enabled kernel, and divide-by-zero from damonmergetworegions(). For example, the WANRONCE() can be triggered like below. # grep DAMONDEBUGSANITY /boot/config-$(uname -r) # CONFIGDAMONDEBUGSANITY=y # damo start # cd /sys/kernel/mm/damon/admin/kdamonds/0 # echo 0 > contexts/0/targets/0/regions/0/start # echo 0 > contexts/0/targets/0/regions/0/end # echo commit > state # dmesg [....] [ 73.705780] ------------[ cut here ]------------ [ 73.707552] start 0 >= end 0 [ 73.708452] WARNING: mm/damon/core.c:359 at damonnewregion+0x6e/0x80, CPU#1: kdamond.0/758 [...] All DAMON API callers eventually use damonsetregions() to setup the regions. Add the validation logic in the function.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who can trigger this issue?
A user or process that can configure DAMON monitoring target regions through a DAMON API caller can create an empty region by setting its start and end to the same value. The example uses the DAMON sysfs administration interface under /sys/kernel/mm/damon/admin/.
Are systems affected by default?
The issue requires DAMON regions to be configured with a zero-length range; the supplied example explicitly writes such values through sysfs and commits the configuration. A warning is specifically described for kernels built with CONFIG_DAMON_DEBUG_SANITY enabled.
What happens if an empty DAMON region is configured?
On kernels with CONFIG_DAMON_DEBUG_SANITY enabled, it can trigger a WARN_ONCE condition. Empty regions can also lead to a divide-by-zero condition in damon_merge_two_regions().
How can I check for attempted or existing exposure?
Check DAMON target-region configuration for regions where start is greater than or equal to end, especially start and end both set to zero. On debug-sanity-enabled kernels, review dmesg for warnings such as "start 0 >= end 0" originating from mm/damon/core.c.
