UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68178: High severity ubuntu/linux-hwe-edge vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: misc: nsm: pin the module while the device is open miscopen() installs a misc driver's file operations with fopsget(), which pins fileoperations::owner before replacing the file's fop. The NSM misc device leaves nsmdevfops.owner unset, so opening /dev/nsm does not take a module reference on the nsm driver. If the driver is built as a module, an open file descriptor can therefore survive rmmod of the module that provides its ioctl callbacks. A later ioctl through that descriptor can call into unloaded module text. Set nsmdevfops.owner to THISMODULE so the misc core holds the module while any /dev/nsm file descriptor is open, matching the lifetime expectation for the installed file operations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is exposed to this issue?
Systems using an affected Ubuntu kernel package are exposed only when the NSM driver is built as a loadable module and the /dev/nsm device can be opened. The issue depends on a process retaining an open /dev/nsm file descriptor while the NSM module is removed.
What access does an attacker need?
An attacker needs local access with permission to open /dev/nsm and issue ioctls through that file descriptor. They also need the NSM module to be unloaded after the descriptor is opened, so that a later ioctl can target unloaded module code.
How can I tell whether a system is in the vulnerable condition?
The vulnerable condition exists if the NSM driver is loaded as a module, /dev/nsm has been opened, and the module can be removed while that descriptor remains open. An open descriptor that survives removal of the NSM module is the relevant exposure condition.
What is the mitigation if an updated kernel cannot be installed immediately?
Do not unload the NSM module while any process may have /dev/nsm open. Restrict access to /dev/nsm to only trusted local users and processes.
