UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68196: High severity ubuntu/linux-aws vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: wilc1000: validate assoc response length before subtracting header wilcparseassocrespinfo() computes the trailing IE length as ieslen = bufferlen - sizeof(res); without first checking that bufferlen is at least sizeof(struct wilcassocresp) (6 bytes). bufferlen is the length reported for a received association response (hostintparseassocrespinfo() passes hifdrv->assocresp / assocrespinfolen straight in) and must be validated before the driver accesses the fixed header. For a frame shorter than the 6-byte fixed header, the subtraction wraps. For a four-byte response the result is truncated to a u16 ieslen of 65534, so kmemdup() then attempts to copy 65534 bytes starting at buffer + sizeof(res), beyond the valid association-response data (CWE-125). A response shorter than four bytes can also cause an out-of-bounds read of res->statuscode at offsets 2 and 3. Reject frames too short to hold the fixed header before touching the header or computing ieslen. Also set the connection status to a failure on this path: the caller falls through to a "conninfo->status == WLANSTATUSSUCCESS" check after the parser returns, so leaving the status untouched could let a malformed short response be treated as a successful association.

In wilc_parse_assoc_resp_info(), reject association-response frames with buffer_len less than sizeof(struct wilc_assoc_resp) (6 bytes) before accessing the fixed header or subtracting the header size to compute ies_len.
- Compensating control
Set conn_info->status to a failure status on the short or malformed association-response path so the caller cannot treat the association as WLAN_STATUS_SUCCESS.

Frequently Asked Questions
What systems are realistically exposed to this issue?
Systems running an affected Ubuntu kernel package are exposed when they use the wilc1000 Wi-Fi driver and process association responses. The affected package families listed are linux, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-gcp, and their listed FIPS variants.
What does an attacker need to exploit it?
An attacker needs to deliver a malformed, undersized Wi-Fi association response to the vulnerable driver. No privileges or user interaction are required according to the supplied vector, but exploitation depends on the wilc1000 driver receiving that response.
What is the impact of a malformed association response?
A response shorter than the six-byte fixed header can cause out-of-bounds reads. A four-byte response can make the driver attempt to copy up to 65,534 bytes beyond the valid response data, which can cause availability impact and disclose data from memory.
What mitigation is available if a kernel update cannot be applied immediately?
The provided information identifies exposure through the wilc1000 Wi-Fi driver processing association responses. Limiting use of that driver or preventing it from associating with untrusted Wi-Fi infrastructure reduces exposure, although no specific configuration workaround is provided.
