UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68204: High severity ubuntu/linux-aws vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: vivid: check for vb2isbusy() when toggling caps The vividupdateformatcap/out() functions must only be called if the capture/output queue are not busy. But for the controls that select the CROP/COMPOSE/SCALE capability that is not checked. Only when streaming starts will they be set to 'grabbed' and it is impossible to change the control, but between REQBUFS and STREAMON you are still allowed to set these controls. Since vividupdateformatcap/out will change the format, this can cause unexpected results. Besides adding these checks, also add a WARNON in vividupdateformatcap/out() if the queue is busy. I'm 90% certain that this is the cause of this syzbot bug: https://syzkaller.appspot.com/bug?extid=dac8f5eaa46837e97b89 But since we never have reproducers, it is hard to be certain. In any case, these checks are needed regardless.

In vivid_update_format_cap() and vivid_update_format_out(), check vb2_is_busy() and prevent the format update when the capture or output queue is busy; also add a WARN_ON when either queue is busy. Apply equivalent busy-queue checks to the controls that select the CROP/COMPOSE/SCALE capability.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is realistically exposed to this issue?
Systems using the Linux kernel vivid media driver are exposed when a local low-privileged user can access and operate the relevant video capture or output device queues. The provided vector requires local access and low privileges; no user interaction is required.
What does an attacker need to do to trigger the vulnerable state?
The attacker needs to change the CROP, COMPOSE, or SCALE capability controls after buffers have been requested with REQBUFS but before streaming begins with STREAMON. In that interval, the controls could change formats while the capture or output queue was busy.
Which Ubuntu kernel package families are listed as affected?
The listed packages are linux, linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-fips, linux-aws-fips, linux-azure-fips, and linux-gcp-fips.
