UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68216: High severity ubuntu/linux vulnerability
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: pwc: Return queued buffers on startstreaming() failure The vb2 framework hands buffers to the driver via bufqueue() before calling startstreaming(). If startstreaming() returns an error without first returning those buffers via vb2bufferdone(), vb2startstreaming() fires WARNON(ownedbydrvcount) and the queued buffers leak. pwc's startstreaming() had two early returns that hit this trap: -ENODEV when the USB device was already disconnected, and -ERESTARTSYS when mutexlockinterruptible() was interrupted by a signal. Call the existing pwccleanupqueuedbufs() helper with VB2BUFSTATEQUEUED before returning (matching the state already used by the pwcisocinit() error path in the same function). This mirrors the uvcvideo fix in commit 4cf3b6fd54eb ("media: uvcvideo: Return queued buffers on startstreaming() failure").

Frequently Asked Questions
Which systems are exposed to this issue?
Ubuntu systems using the listed kernel packages are in scope if they use the pwc media driver. Exploitation is local and requires low privileges; no user interaction is required.
What conditions trigger the vulnerable error paths?
The issue is triggered when streaming startup fails after buffers have been queued, specifically if the USB device has already disconnected or if the interruptible mutex lock is interrupted by a signal.
What is the impact of a failed streaming start?
Queued video buffers can remain owned by the driver instead of being returned to the vb2 framework. This causes a WARN_ON condition and leaks the queued buffers.
What can be done before an update is available?
Avoid starting streams through the pwc driver when the associated USB camera may be disconnected, and avoid interrupting the streaming-start operation with signals. These measures reduce exposure to the documented failing paths but are not a replacement for the corrected kernel behavior.
